Compressing Standards And Multiplexing Tools For Digital Video Broadcasting!

Digital video broadcasting is an evidence of the fact that science has done everything possible and is continuously and consistently striving to make our lives even better. Today, we not want to have machines that support us to make our lives comfortable but we also want to keep the quality of entertainment in our lives at an impeccable level. Today we want to access every television channel of various parts of the world. Thus, having the best quality level of entertainment has become need in our lives, from a once-upon-a-time want. This has happened because we now can have multiplex or a bundle of various TV channels to be broadcast due to digital video broadcasting. The service uses a single radio frequency to broadcast the television channels and services. Digital video broadcasting has enabled various service providers to increase their capacity to make more entertaining programs for a wide variety of audiences around the world.

There are basically two standards used to compress audio and video data for digital video broadcasting. One is MPEG-2 which efficiently compresses various TV channels and services into a bundle. However, now MPEG-2 is superseded by MPEG-4. Its compressing standards for audio AAC and video AVC, work a lot more efficiently that MPEG-2. The comparative analysis of these two standards makes it evident, that MPEG-4 requires as less as half a bit rate than that of MPEG-2 to produce a high quality result. These standards are more defined as protocols, which highlights the fact it can be easily predicted, that there is going be further progress in terms of technology and performance by MPEG-4.

There are various statistical multiplexing methods which can be used to improve the picture quality of the transmission. Normally, each channel is given with a constant bandwidth within which it has to operate, this is known as constant bit rate encoding. But this encoding has been displaying an inefficient performance because it makes the picture quality suffer, at demanding times. Generally, the transmission does not use the entire bandwidth allocated to a particular channel because of huge redundancy in video data.

In order to provide best quality output, another statistical multiplexing tool is employed, which is known as variable bit rate encoding. This tool does allocate a particular bandwidth capacity for a service or channel to operate in but, at times of high demand, the encoding capacity varies so that the service can transmit high quality output. This joint rate control on encoding has two approaches, look ahead and feedback.

It is vital to mention that variable bit rate encoding, when employed with compression standards like MPEG-4, can produce mind-blowing quality of both the sound and video output. It is due to these statistical tools that we are able to get different channels, without making the picture quality suffer. Moreover, with the advent of newer technologies like HDTV series and DVB multiplex, we are in a need to increase the multiplexing capacity of various tools.
